When Is Spine Surgery Necessary?
Are you living with severe neck or back pain? If so, you’ve probably questioned whether you need spine surgery to relieve your symptoms. Spine surgery can be very effective, but it’s not the right choice for everyone. At Tahoe Fracture & Orthopedic Medical Clinic — a full-service practice serving Reno, Nevada, and surrounding areas — we generally recommend that patients only undergo spine surgery if their pain is so disabling that it’s affecting their quality of life, or if they’ve attempted conservative treatment for several months but found no relief.
In many cases, people are able to relieve their neck and back pain using one or more of the following conservative treatment methods:
- Heat/cold therapy
- Pain medication
- Periodic rest
- Physical therapy
- Steroid injections
Keep in mind, however, that everyone is different, and the treatment plan that works for one person may not be as effective for someone else. If your doctor believes that conservative treatment might relieve your pain, he or she will recommend certain methods targeted at your specific needs.
