Should You Go to Urgent Care or the ER?

Urgent Care or ER Carson City NVSo, you’ve injured yourself and you know that it requires prompt medical attention. Your next step is to figure out where to go for treatment — urgent care or the emergency room (ER). Many people prefer going to urgent care clinics because doing so saves them time and money. Indeed, urgent care physicians are often able to provide the same services as ER doctors, but with shorter wait times and lower fees. This makes them an excellent option in cases of acute, non-life-threatening conditions. But, if a condition is life- or limb-threatening, the ER is the better choice.

When to Go to Urgent Care

People often rely on urgent care clinics to provide treatment for the following non-life-threatening conditions:

  • Burns (minor)
  • Cold and flu symptoms (minor)
  • Dehydration
  • Diarrhea
  • Earaches
  • Eye infections
  • Fractures
  • Lacerations (minor)
  • Sinus infections
  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Vomiting (without blood)
  • Wounds (minor)

But, keep in mind that while urgent care clinics are a great choice for acute issues (ones that developed recently), they’re not the best option for chronic issues (ones that have lasted for an extended period of time). For chronic conditions, it’s more appropriate to visit a primary care physician or specialist.

When to Go to the ER

Here are just a few examples of some life- and limb-threatening conditions that require an immediate visit to the ER:

  • Amputations
  • Burns (severe)
  • Compound/open fractures
  • Concussions
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fainting
  • Heart attacks
  • Inability to move or walk
  • Lacerations (severe)
  • Loss of hearing or vision
  • Poisoning
  • Seizures
  • Strokes
  • Vomiting (with blood)
  • Wounds (severe)

No matter what, use your best judgment — if you believe that your life is at risk, get to the ER as quickly as possible.
