What is Total Joint Replacement?
Total joint replacement is the process in which a damaged joint is
replaced with a new, synthetic joint called a prosthesis. This
procedure is most often used to replace damaged hip, knee and shoulder
joints.
Why is Joint Replacement Necessary?
Joints are put under alot of stress throughout our lives and sometimes
they simply cannot withstand the demands we put on them as well as we
would like. They simply wear out. Most often when a joint gets worn more
than you would expect, it's the result of excess strain. This usually is
the result of a pre-existing condition which may or may not have been
previously diagnosed. Therefore, the majority of joint replacements are
done on people who have had previous problems with that specific joint.
However, this is not always the case. Heredity is another big determinant
for those who must undergo joint replacement surgery.
How Do I Know if This Procedure is Right For Me?
It is very likely that, if you're considering joint replacement
surgery, you've alredy consulted with an orthopedist. If not, it is
peritnent that you do so. If you have discussed this option with your
orthopedist, chances are that you've been experiencing symptoms that could
warrant joint replacement. The best way for you to determine if this is
the right choice for you however, is to discuss all of the pros and cons
with your orthopedist as well as with your family. One of the most
important things to discuss with your orthopedist will be possible
complications associated with this procedure.
What Happens During the Operation?
The orthopedic surgeon will make incisions to open up the joint he is
working on. He will then prepare the joint for the insertion of the
prosthesis by removing unnecessary tissue and bone and shaping the
surrounding bones so that the prosthesis will have a nice snug fit. Once
the prosthesis is in place, it will be fixed in place by a couple of
screws. Once the joint heals, these screws will not be removed. Keep in
mind that this is only a general overview of the joint replacement
procedure and the actual process of each specific procedure varies to a
certain degree. Your orthopedic surgeon will be glad to discuss the
details of the procedure with you.
What Will Recovery Be Like?
Recovery from joint replacement requires extensive physical therapy.
Physical therapy will probably start in the hospital shortly after your
surgery. Physical therapy is extremely important for a smooth recovery as
it helps to strenghten surrounding muscles that support the joint and
helps to bring back an appropriate range of motion.
