State-of-the-Art Arthroscopy Procedures Offered in Reno, NV
Residents of Reno, Nevada, and surrounding areas can confidently turn to Tahoe Fracture & Orthopedic Medical Clinic for arthroscopy, an innovative surgical procedure that involves using a small camera to diagnose and repair joint injuries. Dr. Rueben Nair — one of the skilled sports medicine physicians on our team — has extensive experience performing arthroscopic surgery on shoulders, elbows, knees, and various other joints.
Arthroscopy vs. Traditional Open Surgery
Many patients prefer arthroscopy to traditional open surgery because it’s much less invasive. Before the development of arthroscopic surgery, surgeons would need to make a relatively large incision so that they would have enough room to view the injury and make any necessary repairs. In some cases — such as when there’s a particularly large muscle tear — open surgery is still required. In many instances, however, arthroscopic surgeons are now able to achieve the same results using an incision that’s roughly the size of a button hole. Once they’ve made the incision, they insert a small camera that’s connected to a video monitor, inspect the surrounding tissues, and use miniature surgical instruments to treat the injury.
Because arthroscopy requires a significantly smaller incision than traditional open surgery, it carries a lower risk of infection and other complications. Arthroscopy procedures are often performed on an outpatient basis, so patients will get to go home the same day. What’s more, arthroscopy patients will generally experience less pain and stiffness following surgery, and their recovery time will typically be considerably reduced.
